Whitstable Harbour Day 2007
One of the annual events of the town’s nautical calendar is Whitstable’s Harbour Open Day
Initially a bi-annual occasion it began in the early 1990’s & has since grown to become well established & respected bringing in 1000’s of visitors from far &
wide
Opened by Miss Whitstable to a fanfare by Whitstable Sea Cadet Band, centre to the day are the Historic Divers, with displays & demonstrations throughout the day
Commentary relays the earliest days of Whitstable Divers unequalled reputation from its humble beginnings in the 1800’s
With visiting historic vessels, nautical exhibitions & displays, competitions & shows for the whole family
And as you’d expect there’s plenty of local seafood to try, so if you’ve never had a whelk or a winkle let alone an oyster, come along for a great family fun day out

Whitstable Harbour Association who are they?
The people behind the event are Jean West whose family have been working at Whitstable Harbour for five generations
Vowing to never marry a fisherman Jean broke her vow when she walked out with Derek, now family head of West Whelks at the fisherman’s huts on the West Quay
Wiz Cunningham, a well know licensee, once ran the old Punch Tavern, now the Quay Side, the Smugglers which is now called Tappers & Beevers in Ashford. Part of the Oyster Festival logistics team for 5 years, Wiz is a wellknown colourful town character who now works at Whitstable Yacht Club
Rowland Joint is Chairman of the Whitstable & District Angling Club, housed in the old Steam Packet, once watering hole for passengers & staff from the Crab & Winkle line that ran from Whitstable Harbour to Canterbury West Station
Bob Le - Roi Compare of Whitstable Harbour Day, began his broadcaster career on Radio City on the Sea Forts, readily seen from the Whitstable shoreline. He’s behind Red Sands Radio broadcasting from the Forts from 14th July on 1278kHz marking the anniversary of the last Offshore Pirate Radio broadcasts & the Towns Oyster Festival Whitstable Harbour Day opens 28th July 2007 at 11.00
