Press Release
Sunday 15th July 2007

On this beautiful sunny Sunday the sounds of Red Sands Radio on 1278 AM  can be heard in shops and markets in and around Whitstable.  The guys aboard the Redsands Fort are being cheered on by the numerous boats packed with visitors to the location.

Ex “radio pirates” from way back have done programmes, including Ian McCrae and Printz; and keeping it moving out there is ex-pirate Bob le Roi, who has taken up temporary residence on Red Sands.

Test transmissions were held on Friday evening and full broadcasts commenced on Saturday 14th of July. Broadcasting from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m each day, the station will close down finally on the 23rd.   “Gremlins in the works” chastised us for 15 minutes at the end of the Saturday broadcast but were quickly resolved by our able crew.

The operatives of Red Sands Radio are 14 strong, some of them lifelong friends and colleagues. This has been reflected in the superb response from our listeners and we are delighted to be a source of joy.

This broadcast is an effort organised by Project Redsand, brought into being to preserve the Redsand Fort for future generations. A powerful symbol of British heritage right here on the horizon.

The weather has been exceptionally badmaking operations difficult.  The performance of the Red Sands Radio staff and volunteers has been staggering in its dedication and determination.

Red Sands Radio is promoting the Whitstable Oyster Festival which starts on the 21st of July.

Mandy Kewley, local artist – singer/songwriter will be performing on the Red Sands Fort on the 21st July, accompanying herself on guitar and with Dave Willoughby on drums.
